THE BAY AREA GREYS

Description:

Famous photographer John Guttman was walking down FILLMORE street in San Francisco, early one A.M. in 1934. Lovely, WARM Spring day....

Camera in hand, Guttman decided to try to catch a few early morning atmospheric shots of the Fillmore District. The air was uncommonly warm for that time of year, yet, a woman, fully veiled, hobbled clumsily out of a filthy alley, jerking strangely right past him, without a glance...

Gutmann was immediately intrigued. Had been studying people and the way they walked for many years, from the streets of NAZI Germany to the boulevards of Paris.

This was no woman! Gutmann reasoned that it was MAN stumbling on high heels, likely a CRIMINAL, on the lam from the law, so he ducked through a hotel lobby to get ahead of the incognito senorito...

Gutmann managed to get just ONE shot. He was standing perfectly still when the "woman" haltingly strode by and looked up at him...

What he saw froze the marrow in his bones. He hurried home and developed the photo....

He called it "DEATH STALKS FILLMORE".
