CHINATOWN

Description:

We speak of peace, love, brotherhood, tolerance, togetherness....

Yet, everywhere you go, it's Chinatown....

There is a Chinatown in nearly every major city on Earth. New York. San Francisco. Jakarta. MOSCOW. Surabaya. Philadelphia. Chicago. Toronto. Washington, D.C. Singapore. Kuala Lumpur. LIVERPOOL. Barrio Chino in Mexico City......

Everywhere you go, it's Chinatown, just as Robert Towne was trying to tell us...

WAR in China and the promise of a good life in HAWAII prompted a flood of folks from China westward over the seas...

The Gold Fields of California and the Railroads brought great numbers to the WEST...

Business in the SOUTH, particularly the opening of Grocery Stores and Dry Cleaners, brought a large influx into the Mississippi region, where they sold mainly to Blacks, who felt that they were more welcome in the Asian stores....

Many Chinese became BAPTISTS, and attended Black churches. Some carried the religion back to China, where it thrives to this day, with a definite Black American feeling......

In the EAST, particularly New York, Chinese immigrants virtually took over the Dry Cleaning business and were reaching into the Fishing Markets...

The white businessmen were severely disgruntled....

Back in the 1882, the good 'ol US of A passed the Anti-Chinese Act, the Chinese Exclusion Act, actually, which sharply curtailed Chinese immigration... "They're takin' our JOBS!" was the cry then....

The Chinese Government threatened to SUE, still, the law was not officially repealed until Dec 17, 1943...

Did you know that it was ILLEGAL for a white to marry a person of Chinese descent until the late 1950's in America? The great cinematographer James Wong Howe had to hide his bride for over twenty years, I believe.....Miscegnation....

EVERYWHERE is Chinatown.

In Moscow, Russian officials threatened to take over the Kitai Market, a thriving Chinese business district. The Chinese Government interceded and forced the Muscovites to back off....The Mayor of Moscow HATES the name "Chinatown", and vows to have it changed...

Everywhere is Chinatown. Don't try to understand it. Just keep going, nothing to see.

There is no making sense of it.

It's just Chinatown......
