EASTERN INTRIGUE Anna Mae Wong

Anna Mae Wong was the toast of Hollywood in the 20's and 30's.

She was born Frosted Yellow Willows, in Los Angeles' Chinatown. Her Father and Mother had come to America to seek their fortunes and wound up opening a Laundry, something her father was against, but it was one of the few options open to a man of Chinese descent in those days.

She was raised in a large family, 4 brothers and three sisters, who were all given rather exotic names that were changed to bland American names so that the children would blend in better at L.A.'s public schools...

She was "discovered" by great direct Marshall Neilan and first appeared in films with Lon Chaney, but had already started a respectable career upon the European Stage.

She was one in a Million, and I first fell for her in a film called "In Old San Francisco", a TERRIFIC movie which highlights EXACTLY how Spanish Landowners lost all of their land to California Attorneys.....

I will write more about her at another time...
