DEATH of the HIPPIE MOVEMENT

DEATH of the HIPPIE MOVEMENT

HIPPIES did NOT sell out...

They were INFILTRATED and BEATEN DOWN.

The COPS of the late sixties were TERRIFIED of the Hippie Movement because they did not understand it, and what one does not understand one FEARS...

They did their BEST, the Hippies did...

They housed and fed the poor...

I have watched beautiful Hippie Girls hand Police Officers plates piled high with good food, only to have the cops toss the plates into the street....

The Leaders of the movement were highly intelligent Women and Men, they knew the END was coming long before it officially occurred.

There was no big ceremony, it all just faded away....

Too many kids that participated did not understand just WHAT it was all about, did not WANT to understand, they just wanted to get HIGH and find some of that FREE LOVE....

AHH, but it really was a sort of PARADISE for awhile.

All those Happy, SMILING faces that greeted my young eyes as I escaped from my Grandfather and wandered the HAIGHT.....

It has TRIED to come back, I was old enough to experience the PUNK effect on the Haight back in the Eighties, all the GREAT Record Stores, the great Book Stores....

Robert BEERBOHM'S Comic Book Stores, the resurgence of R. Crumb, it was ALMOST there....

There was a BAR on Haight Street not far from the RED VIC that resembled a crashed Airplane, that served the STRANGEST drinks....

The PUNKS tried to keep the Haught from becoming GENTRIFIED, it was a losing battle, but not without some SMALL victories....

I remember the FIRES....
