A SAINT IN THE CITY

A SAINT IN THE CITY

For CLARENCE CLEMONS.

Just heard the news about the BIG MAN...

Another of the GREATS, gone....

I remember when the big BUZZ on Bruce Springsteen began:

"I have SEEN the future, and his name is Bruce Springsteen."

OR was it: "I have seen Rock and Roll's future, and it's name is Bruce Springsteen"?

All I know is that Jon Landau said it...

I made up my mind to HATE Bruce Springsteen, right from the start....

But there was something INTRIGUING about him....I decided to listen with open ears and mind...

The Album was "GREETINGS, from Asbury Park, N. J."

Will NEVER forget the impact "4th of July, Asbury Park (SANDY)" had on my young ears and MIND....

Then the next album "The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle..."

EVERYTHING was PERFECT with the E Street Band. The SAX was unusually URGENT, and, to me, an unexpected KICK, a NOD to the PAST, to the music of Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington and all the greats...

I don't bemoan the music of TODAY.

I had YESTERDAY.

It STILL EXISTS.

I am listening to it RIGHT NOW.

GOODNIGHT, Clarence Clemons....
