If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old-time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark
Or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost was me
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost
That you can't see.....
If I could read your mind, love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind the Drug Stores sell
When you reach the part
When the heartaches come
That hero would be me
But heroes often fail...
And you won't read that book again
Because the ending's just too hard to take....
Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell were the biggest stars at RKO, during the Howard Hughes years. Their genuine affection and love for each other carried them through the rest of their lives....
Jane Russell was TRULY a feisty, smart, SHARP woman that learned the hard way, in her very first picture "THE OUTLAW", what Hollywood was truly all about. When she first started out, after being pursued by Howard Hughes after he chanced across one of her modeling photos in a magazine, she was still an innocent, smile-for-the-cameras type girl. She walked all over the "Outlaw" set, smiling and posing for photos....
She was outraged to find that, unbeknownst to her, RACY, full cleavage photos in the trash magazines of the time.
Seems the crew members had set her up, they were actually hidden behind and UP trees, peering their cameras over ROOFTOPS, Balconies, Rafters, WHEREVER, so that they could get shots of her more than ample BREASTESES....
Which they then sold to the magazines...
Started TONS of trouble for Hughes during filming...had to redesign the BRA in order to reign in her and lift her UP...took FIVE years to get the movie released....
I mistakenly told you all that "The Outlaw" was a Jesse James film, but, now that i think of it, the TITULAR character was actually Billy the Kid...I THINK...I saw The Outlaw as a kid, and honestly, all I can remember about it is Jane Russell...
Probably WHY I am a FOOL for dark-haired women....though I was a sucker for Kim Novak.....
Robert Mitchum was a far more INTELLIGENT man than they EVER gave him credit for. I know that Frank Sinatra thought that Mitchum was seriously deficient in the brain department, and a little bit PREJUDICED....Sinatra just naturally assumed, due to his Connecticut background, that he just HAD to be...Then baseball legend Satchel Paige came to town for a bit part in a Mitchum film, and Sinatra was stunned to find that Mitchum was the biggest Satchel Paige fan in the world, squired that man all about town, introducing him to literally EVERYBODY....and he was the one that worked behind the scenes to get Paige the part in the movie in the first place....
Jane Russell and Robert Mitchum were devoted friends from the first moment they met and managed to have a friendship based on LOVE and mutual RESPECT for the rest of their lives...
Both Russell and Mitchum sat down years ago for a SNAPPY interview with Robert Osbourne on TCM that is truly MARVELOUS...Mitchum is EXACTLY as you would expect, Russell still RADIANT, like an AUNT you would be PROUD to have had....
