GOES-WEST MALFUNCTION CAUSING DATA OUTAGES

GOES-West malfunctioned approximately 20:49 GMT on 3/21. Any DCP that
transmits to GOES-West and GOES-West ONLY is not getting to Wallops
Island (or the USGS’s EDDN facility) and therefore is not uplinked to
DOMSAT and available to HADS.

Approximately 21:18 GMT, Wallops failed their systems over to acquire data
that is normally downlinked from GOES-W to now downlink from GOES-E.
Unfortunately this only picks up DCP signals that are able to reach both
GOES-W and GOES-E.

NESDIS is in recovery mode trying to get the satellite back into normal
operating mode, but this process takes nearly a day to recover. Current
estimates are for GOES-West to return to normal somewhere in the neighborhood
of 18 GMT, if all goes well.

I will pass on more and better information as it becomes available.
