A brawl broke out in Ukraine's parliament over a bill that would allow the official use of the Russian language in the country.
The violent scuffles broke out between members of the pro-Western opposition and lawmakers from President Viktor Yanukovych's party. They were fighting over a bill that would allow the Russian language to be spoken in courts, hospitals and other institutions in the Russian-speaking regions of the country. The pro-Western opposition wants to take Ukraine out of Russia's shadow. But the president's party bases its support in the country's Russian-speaking east.
