Iran says the West is trying to make up in Syria for the defeat, experienced by the Israeli regime in the region.
Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, said on Wednesday, "They (the West) wanted to mobilize all the financial resources of the Arab reactionaries and send arms and weapons to topple the Syrian government because of the defeat of the Zionist regime [of Israel] in North Africa and Middle East."
"But why are they doing this? Because Syria is the golden link of resistance," he added, addressing the third International Conference of Islamic Resistance, currently underway in Isfahan.
The event, which is also attended by representatives from Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt among others, focuses on Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories. It will also address the relationship between Islamic resistance and Islamic Awakening in the region.
Secretary-General of the Lebanese resistance movement of Hezbollah, Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah is also to address the event via video link.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are behind the unrest while the opposition accuses the security forces of killing protesters.
The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the insurgents are foreign nationals.
Damascus also says the insurgents are supported by Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
