An American rock band has caused outrage when they rejected a call to boycott and played a live concert in Israel.

The Palestinian academic and cultural boycott of Israel launched a campaign asking the band not to perform in Israel. This campaign was supported by many groups including Mashroa Leila who cancelled backing the concert on the grounds that to support concerts in Israel is to support the Israeli Occupation of Palestine.

Movements and bands from around the world including Turkey and Lebanon helped to exert pressure on the Chilli Peppers not to perform.

In an open letter to the Red Hot Chilli Pepper, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement stated that Israel's attempts to mask systematic human-rights abuses and decades-long oppression against the Palestinians largely rely on its ability to maintain a
progressive and democratic image in the eyes of the international community. Israel often promotes itself as "the only Democracy in the Middle East". However, Israel's apartheid policies are inherent even to something as seemingly light-hearted and joyous as rock concerts."

"Although boycott movements and the international community exerted pressure on the Chilli Peppers not to perform in Tel Aviv, they sparked outrage when they performed there and as part of the tour visited the Western Wall."
