This idea is completely garbage. The atomic bomb is different than today's nuclear bombs. Atomic Bombs are Hydrogen Bombs which split hydrogen atoms in a chain reaction. They did not use Uranium at all. Today's Nuclear Weapons use Uranium 235 (and Plutonium), which is weapons grade Uranium and does not form naturally at that concentration. That's why Uranium 235 is a specially bred type of Uranium; it is man-made Uranium.

Actually, they did have an atomic weapon built, but we (America) beat them to the punch. They had their bomb completed only a day or two prior to our bombing of Japan, but didn't have the means at that point in the war to deploy. We really did just beat them by the skin of our teeth. They actually made a few attempts to sabotage and spy on our then top secret atomic weapons program (The Manhattan Project).

I recently saw a Documentary that said that U-Boot 234 did have a nuclear bomb on it that was being brought to Japan. It wasn't a nuclear bomb in the classical sence however it was what we call today a dirty bomb. The Germans couldn't create enough fissionable material to create a chain reaction but had plenty of radioactive material for a dirty bomb.Despite what we think we know about the Nazis - they didn't have the inclination to use this weapon. The war was ending for them and no one among them thought that using this weapon would help them win the war as they knew if it did fail - they would have been facing war crime trials (some who got lighter sentences at Nuremberg would surely have been executed with the hard liners who by that time had no power any longer). The Germans knew that the Japanese would have a better chance to deliver this weapon and they had the moral and lack of conscience to succeed.

Interesting but kind of a stretch of the imagination. It is true that the Germans were working on a atomic bomb and had a heavy water factory too. They were some years away though and did not have enough staff to do the job according to the history I have seen. Both the Americans and the Soviets ended up grabbing whatever they could both material and people as they swallowed up the remains of the Nazi regime. Most of the original ideas for whatever reason seemed to come from the Germans at that time. Of course if any of this is true, the Military would not want everybody to know what they had. Also, it would have scared the crap out of a lot of people I am sure at the time.
