Well, Hoover had to go, but using military force against veterans lawfully demonstrating for payments promised them did NOTHING to hurt the careers of McArthur, Patton, and Eisenhower.

In fact, they were rewarded - for attacking veterans in the streets.

Today people speculate if US troops would ever be used against US citizens.

Only a country deep in historical amnesia could ask such a question.
