Solar eruption leaves behind twisted, magnetic carnage

A towering arch of material called a prominence erupted from the Sun on January 23, 2013. This animation, created from ultraviolet images from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, shows the eruption, and the roiling material left on the Sun as the solar magnetic field lines reconnect.
