Having fun in an annual ice fishing tournament held at Independence Lake in southern Michigan. The ice fishing derby is geared more towards kids, but, it's a way to have fun in the outdoors even in winter time with the cold and snow storms. Some of the largest fish caught were a longnose gar and a couple bowfin or dogfish. I just caught one northern pike and it was too small, at least I didn't get skunked. :) There were a few nice yellow perch and crappie caught as well. I believe the largest pike of the contest was 27 1/8" with second place at 27 1/16". I fished with tip ups for pike, but there were a lot of folks jigging for panfish as well. A lot of fish were caught. The day started out near 0 degrees, but turned out nice and sunny with just a few light winds. Here is a video of the 2011 ice fishing contest held at the same lake: www.youtube.com As you can see the weather was much different in 2011, and in 2012 the contest was cancelled due to mild weather and lack of safe ice.
