LOST LINERS (2000)
Titanic • Lusitania • Empress of Ireland
Join famed "Titanic" discoverer, oceanographer and maritime geologist Robert Ballard on his last expedition to explore the ocean liners of the Gilded Age.
The ocean liners of the early twentieth century were known for their majesty but are remembered now for their tragedy. LOST LINERS presents a glimpse of this bygone era, when the Ă©lite traveled the globe on moving palaces of steel and marble, while millions of immigrants traveling to the New World were packed in steerage.
"Titanic," the world's most famous ocean liner, sank on her maiden voyage in 1912, killing 1,523. Two years later in Canada's greatest maritime disaster, the "R.M.S. Empress of Ireland" sank in fourteen devastating minutes, taking more lives than "Titanic." "Lusitania," a British passenger ship, was torpedoed in 1915 by a German U-boat off the coast of Ireland.
Dr. Ballard and his crew embark on an expedition in the cold, clear waters of the St. Lawrence Seaway to explore the ghostly remains of the "Empress of Ireland." Fiber optics and remote vehicles allow viewers to tour the once elegant steamer, which sank just five miles off the shores of Québec on a foggy morning in 1914. This program weaves historical footage with never-before-seen images of the super-vessel as she rests uneasily at the bottom of the sea.
One by one, the great ships of the Gilded Age disappeared. LOST LINERS takes us on a final voyage to visit the few that remain — resting on the ocean floor.
