What exactly is ageing? More and more, ageing is being studied just like any other genetic trait, yielding to an armoury of modern scientific tools. David Gems, at UCL's Institute of Healthy Ageing, leads one of the labs teasing apart the genetic nature of ageing using one of nature's simplest animals, the nematode worm. In this short film, David and his student, Cassandra, take us on a journey exploring the nature of ageing and how scientists are unravelling its film by Barry J view an award-winning film about ageing and immortality from the Wellcome Trust, 'Until', follow this link:

Nothing remarkable here. I work in medical biotech. Many cancer cells are immortal. Meaning they circumvent cell line death using telomerase that extends the timing mechanism (in the telomeres of DNA) in all cell lines to terminate. They also inhibit various proteins that regulate cell growth like Bcl 2 associated proteins. This just looks like a worm in DAPI immunofluorescence stain the has an affinity to microtubules in the cells undergoing mitotic division. If you treat them with a drug like colchicine or taxol it suspends the cells in a metaphase and they, along with the organism die. Alternatively, depending on the drug, it may simply prevent further polymerization of the mitotic spindles necessary for mitotic division. What you are seeing is a poor little C. elegans or similar worm poisoned by a cancer drug.

Amazing what we are discovering these days. This will never be permitted for use on sheeple though, or at least not for a long long time. First of all there is the GM ethical question that we are still struggling with as a species. Secondly there is the social aspect to consider: if we all were to start living 10 times as long all of a sudden, there would be a population boom of epic proportions and the only way the race could continue to support itself (without restricting reproduction) would be to leave the planet. Thirdly but perhaps the most influential aspect is that big pharma are very interconnected with our infrastructures through the revolving door policy between politics and industry executives. This means that they will fight this course of treatment because it will mean their companies profit will dramatically deminish, and since they own or are the politicians who will have the deciding choice, our democratic ways will fail us (the people) again in favour of corporations. There is always the liklihood of course that the 1% will get first dibs on this new field of medicine but who wants those gluttonous destructive warmongering genocidal psychopaths living longer? Not me!!! In summary, great idea... unfortunately it is unlikely to benefit any person directly outside the 1% and with extended longevity think of the harm some of them could cause
