I work for an large electrical state company since many years and have the knowledge and experience to tell that most of these 'Blackout scenario' are over exaggerated and fear based.

A CME or a planned cyber attack could partially create a shutdown of a given power grid. When some of the production falls it could create a domino effect and shutdown large portion of the electrical grid. Just like it happen in Europe not so long ago.

But nothing will damage the electrical grid enough to prevent the whole planet or even continent to be out of power during months or weeks. Everything is fixable.

Take the black ice crisis in January 1998 in Quebec for example. It literally destroyed thousands of kilometers of electrical transport line in one of the most solid and advanced electrical network of the world. During the winter, when Quebec need the most its electricity to heat houses. It took several months, but it was fixed and was not the end of the world.

No CME or cyber attack could never destroy that much metal as it did in this crisis, so no need to fear.

We had a drama/documentary programme hear in the U.K. not so long ago about the exact same thing. It was on Ch4 entitled 'BLACKOUT'.
I don't think this is a coincidence that the U.S. and U.K. had similar documentaries. There are either preparing us for something or It's all fear porn.
