Gamma-ray bursts rank as the most powerful explosions in the known universe. Scientists believe they are caused when a massive star runs out of nuclear fuel and collapses under its own weight, forming a black hole. This black hole then drives a powerful jet of particles that drill all the way through the collapsing star at nearly the speed of light.
