Dr Carl Sagan died on December 20, 1996.
El Hierro has been threatening for 300 or more years now. Should I be worried? Should I worry about meteors and Obama Drone strikes and GMOs and Fukashima, and crossing the street and Yellowstone mega caldera and the Knockout Game and drug crazed government shooters and (should I go on) planet X and Linsday graham's terrorist nuke inn Charleston harbor. (Oops that one almost happened but the generals responsible for thwarting it and dropping it 600 miles off the coast were fired.)

The video was made in 1996.

The stupid comments here remind me of a chinese saying. "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt."
A tsunami wave is driven by the transference of kinetic energy from molecule to molecule. It begins with a shock wave of some type either from an earthquake or a landslide.
The kinetic energy is then transfered from molecule to molecule. That's why these waves travel so fast and great distances. When they are out at high sea where the depth of the ocean is so great they are not much higher than normal waves but travel much faster.
When they get close to the continental shelf and the depth gets lesser the front of the wave slowes down and the force at the back pushes at the front end much like a train wreck. Then the wave rises and slowes down.
The only thing I don´t like about this video is that they show the wave reaching land at the same speed that it travels on the high seas. That is wrong.
The earthquake in the Indian Ocean 2004 produced a wave that crossed that ocean in about 8 to 10 hours.
The Japan earthquake in 2011 produced a wave that crossed the Pacific Ocean and americans got a small taste of it then.
Please read and educate yourselfs before speaking out your asses. Happy new year.

    UMM HMMM
I watched the video on the history channel with the stupid tub test etc.
this theory claims if the canary islands crack and slide into the ocean it
will create a gigantic sunamai that will cross the entire atlantic and not
shrink thus destroying the east coast of the usa.
    I say its BULL SHIT.
If i remember correctly the indian ocean sunamai petered out to a foot or
two wave as it spread out. africa got hit with almost nothing. i think it
is absurd to think a wave can travel that far from a landslide across
thousands of miles of ocean and tides and not die down to nothing due
to resistance. if this stupid theory was in fact true than every wave in the ocean
should continue endlessly and at the same height.
drop a big rock in any lake and tell me if it keeps its height all the
    way to the opposite shore.
    False Flag anyone?
