The first civilian airplane has landed at Aleppo International Airport in northwestern Syria following earlier liberation of the area around Aleppo by the Syrian forces. Syrian media reported that the airport, closed for a year because of fighting, was reopened on Wednesday. "A first airplane landed at Aleppo International Airport after the Syrian army secured the outskirts," Syria's SANA news agency reported, adding, "Repairs were made at the airport, which had been attacked by terrorists." The airport was closed in January 2013 after foreign-backed forces launched attacks in the northwestern province, making it dangerous to use the airport. On January 13, the Syrian army soldiers tightened the noose around foreign-backed militants in the countryside of Aleppo city, establishing the security of the airport. Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - are supporting the militants operating inside the country. The United Nations says more than four million Syrians will be forced out of their homes in 2014 by the escalating conflict in the country that has killed more than 100,000 people and displaced millions so far.
