Those are the most dangerous mountainous areas near Damascus. Press TV team headed to an over 1900 meters high frontline in al-Qalamoun region near the Cherubim monastery where a 40 feet tall statue of Jesus Christ stands. The strategic importance of the mountain got Nusra Front militants to attack it several times. But they failed and over a hundred were killed in their last offensive. Thousands of foreign backed militants are fortified in the mountainous area of al-Qalamoun in Damascus countryside. This behind me is Rankous town, which is one of the main strongholds of the militants in this area. An army commander told Press TV that militants suffered heavy losses in their latest attack. Some parts of al-Qalamoun is controlled by Nusra Front and so called FSA armed men. The major towns that include the militants' headquarters are Yabroud and Rankous. Many mortars were fired from such areas at civilians in safe zones like Saidnaya. The mountains connect al-Qalamoun with Lebanon, making it a perfect supply line for weapons and ammunition, especially from the Lebanese town of Ersal as militants use it as a crossing point into Syria.
