At least 5 protesters are killed, and 150 others injured in clashes with police in Kiev [PressTV]

The worst day of violence in Ukraine since the anti-government protests began there in November. At least 10 people-- including three policemen-- have been killed in fresh clashes between the protesters and security forces in Kiev's main protest camp.

Protesters hurled petrol bombs, fireworks and stones at riot police who have surrounded the city's Independent Square. This after the deadline set by security authorities to end the protests in the capital expired. Meanwhile Ukraine's prosecutor-general has warned of harshly punishing those responsible for orchestrating the violence. Opposition leader Vitali Klitschko had earlier appealed to the president not to send-in security forces to break up the protest and urged women and children to leave the area. Around 50 police officers and hundreds of protesters were injured in clashes that erupted between the two sides earlier in the day.
