New IRIS Spacecraft Spots Its First Strong Flare | NASA Space Science HD

NASA's new IRIS (Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph) spotted Its first strong flare on January 28, 2014. IRIS was launched in the summer of 2013. This flare was labeled as M-class, which is the second strongest class flare after X-class.

IRIS studies the layer of the sun's atmosphere called the chromosphere, which is key to regulating the flow of energy and material as they travel from the sun's surface out into space.
