The foetus had been cut from its pregnant bull shark mother, which had been caught by a commercial fisherman in the Gulf of California. Photos of the dead small shark with one eye in the centre of its face became an instant internet hit after the images were published in July. Shark experts said it was unlikely the foetus would have survived after its natural birth. Its condition is known as cyclopia, a "developmental anomaly in which only one eye develops", according to LiveScience. Researchers said although such a creature was rare, the albino shark was genuine. "As far as I know, less than 50 examples of an abnormality like this have been recorded," Mexican shark expert Felipe Galvan Magana said.
