I wish that my uncle Don was still alive today. He was very much a no-nonsense type of guy, and my father's older brother. Born and raised in Missouri, and yearning for what the world had to offer, he lied about his age and joined the Navy at the age of 16. He became a Sea plane tender. In that position, he was consistantly working with the pilots. He was there in 1947, with Byrd, on this mission that was called Highjump. I had asked him about his experiences there, and he was straightforward and honest. Nothing extroidinary. He was the type of person, that if he had knowledge otherwise, that was sworn to secrecy, he would have told me so, or that it was none of my business. He would not have made a simple story up to cover it. Yes, later Byrd made some fanciful claims, but they were not backed by crew members. Was he losing his marbles? or dis-info? Who knows.
