A fatal US police shooting of a mentally ill teenage girl has sparked anger in San Mateo County, California.

The shooting occurred in the coastal city of Half Moon Bay late on Tuesday. Family members of Yanira Serrano-Garcia say they called for medical help for the girl who suffered from depression. They say, instead of a paramedic response, police arrived at the scene and shot the 18-year-old woman. Authorities say the girl lunged at Sheriff's deputy with a knife. Yanira's family and friends have rejected the official version of the story and are calling for an impartial investigation into the shooting. They argue that the lethal force was not necessary in handling the girl.
