Many pagan customs and rituals have been interwoven with Christianity from the start and have been taken from regions were Christianity started as well as were it spread. It started as basically a Jewish messianic religion with some cultish influences from such notables as John the Baptist who emphasized ritual purity through emersion in water. There are also some influences from the Essenes and other Jewish sects that were present at the time. What seems rather unique for this region of the world at this time was the emphasis that Jesus put on the equality of the sexes and classes and his advocacy of nonviolence and peaceful love. The latter is very reminiscent of Buddhism, which had been in existence for about 500 years by this time. I could go on and on about pagan influences on Christianity from the "Son of God" as being taken literally instead of figuratively (A heavy Greek/Roman influence), to our traditional holiday celebrations, such as Christmas and Easter (Pagan European and Babylonian influences). Christianity was not invented whole-cloth out of thin air, nor did it evolve in a vacuum.
