On occasion parasitic infestations/ infection prior to death can account for the mutilations...additionally when shut-ins pass, often pets will feed on their remains prior to their being found. I've personally seen and witnessed M.E. reports of cats feeding upon their previous owners, and subsequently being put to sleep-cats seem to do this more readily than dogs. Necrotizing fasctitis is another reasonable explination. Not to mention that often maggots consume any toxins in the corpse and hence die as well-leaving a partially desicated cadaver.
