    Hmm, perhaps in an attempt to sway early pagan worshippers-i.e. Greek, Roman-the phallis was used to draw in attention-then too many weirdos were drawn in-and then the phallic was just too much of a turn on for the freaky Catholic priests-hence the continued portrayal of "cocks" the portrayal of sodomy to remind the church elders of "better days".
