Looks like clay... You should have broken a piece off, so we could see inside. It would have been the same color as the few globs of oil that had washed up where you were filming. That's not to say that the oil spill is trivial. Animals, fish and the ecosystem are being severely damaged. I know for a fact that through out our recorded history (and presumably long before since its a continuous cycle), that natural oil seeps into the oceans during earth quakes and volcanoes some times spilling billions of gallons over a long stretch of time for mellenia. Sure there might be trillions of barrels left world wide, but we extract it at 1,000,000,000% faster then it renews its self (renewable resource). In the scope of things, there is hardly any oil left, and I believe mother nature regulates herself, and we have been draining her blood (oil)for a very, very long time. We humans drill as far into the earth as humanly possible and then drain the life blood. The reason oil is called a fossil fuel, is because oil is made out of fossils. oil is the residual left overs from very old decomposing life. Prehistoric Plants and animals have been mulled over and over again. Being pulverized by pressure and friction for thousands and thousands of years. I would probably have earth quakes more often if my blood was being drained as well...
