What is so bloody great about that? It is well known for ages that there is water there. In fact, the Universe is full of water. With a decent telescope anyone is abel to see the polarcaps on Mars. So what?

Spectra of the polar caps on mars show it to be overwhelmingly DRY ice, not water ice. That is, it's solidified carbon dioxide.

While _some_ amount of the polar caps was water ice, we couldn't have been sure because such a small reading could well have been anomalous.

yes you are correct i ddo even have the news clip from the 70's saying they found water, i guess this got such big news because the rover tasted the water and in the 70's we just saw it in photos.
