"Now it appears he made the whole thing up." (KEYT)
"It was based on a fabrication." (KNBC)
"He made it all up. He's a liar." (KTLA)
WOMAN: "How could anybody lie like that?"
YOUTH: "Why would you lie like that - just to make it a story and be famous?" (KABC)
Los Angeles school police officer Jeffrey Stenroos not only lied about being shot -- but also cost the city nearly half a million dollars. Even LA's KTLA reporter was visibly outraged...
DAVID BEGNAUD: "There were kids who sat in classrooms for five to six hours, had to go urinate in a can, all because this guy says somebody shot him."
...and it gets worse. The police officer made up a suspect - ABC affiliate KEYT reports a sketch was drawn and the community was on a ghost hunt for hours.
"The reported shooting put the woodland health community on edge after authorities thought a shooting suspect was on the loose."
L.A.'s KABC reporters attempted to visit Stenroos, who is out on a $20,000 bail, but he didn't answer the door.. .and while now everyone knows the police officer lied - the force says mums the word.
"There were some inconsistencies, which I will not detail that emerged early on and it was a combination of things that caused them to become extremely skeptical. "
The Daily Mail reports L.A. Chief of the school department Steven Zipperman says Stenroos will be fired. He said Stenroos is...
"...a 'disgrace' ... 'Obviously it's as shocking to us as it is to anyone else...[and] While Mr Stenroos is a disgrace to the badge, his individual and dangerous actions should not reflect on the hard-working men and women in law enforcement'."
Despite the bad press, a neighbor of Stenroos' said he was always an honest, helpful guy.
