Maritime Laser Demonstration
Uploaded by usnavyresearch on Apr 8, 2011
The Office of Naval Research and their industry partner Northrop Grumman successfully disable a small target vessel using a solid-state, high-energy laser (HEL), mounted onto the deck of the Navy's self-defense test ship, the former USS Paul Foster (DD 964)
This is more of a proof of concept test to see if you can actually shoot a laser off of a pitching warship and still have it hit something. The REAL energy weapon will be the FEL (Free Electron Laser) that the navy is also working on. That thing in its current state can burn through 20 feet of steel in 1 second, and that is the low-powered test version. It can also dynamically change its frequency, making it all-weather. Truly an awesome weapon the FEL is.
