I have thought of using compost to help heat the house. Simply take yard waste, left over food, and even possibly solid human waste as well, put it in a sealed composter in the basement of your house with a good heat exchanger (and ventilation) and let it heat your home from the bottom up. In colder climates, such as michigan where I live, it would not be able to heat your whole house but would help. If one did not wish to add human waste to compost, installing a septic system in your basement would help. You could also possibly generate a small amount of gas which could be stored and burned or used for cooking. I have seen simple digesters used in India with cow manure. It did take a lot of manure to make enough gas to cook with though.

Absolutely great. If only they would make many many more of this kind of technology the world wouldn't have to be hungry. That is one smart man to have thought of that.
