" An Independence Day Message from M.W. Richard J. Stewart

Dear Brethren & Friends of Massachusetts Freemasonry,
This Monday, July 4th, marks the 235 anniversary that our Founding Fathers adopted the Declaration of Independence. The holiday, and what it stands for, reminds me that the Declaration wasnâ€™t just a political statement; it was a philosophical one as well. Thatâ€™s because it was influenced, in part, by Masonic lessons that helped men like Franklin and Hancock prepare for the greatness in life that awaited them.
We often forget that the Declaration of Independence put forth a powerful, and very original argument for its time, that claimed:
â€œâ€¦that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.â€
Or, as Brother Benjamin Franklin states in A Timely Chat with America, â€œthat manâ€™s liberties and rights come from God, not kings, and that ordinary men can govern themselves.â€
During this Independence Day weekend, I hope you might take a few minutes to watch this short video on AskaFreemason.org - featuring Tony-Award winning actor Richard Easton - to help remind us of that very important connection our Fraternity shares with the foundation of our country; and, to reflect on how we - as Freemasons - can be a part of its future. Feel free to share this video with Masons and non-Masons alike, it is a message everyone in America should hear.
As you join together with your families, friends, or Brothers this weekend, I wish you happiness, safety, and peace. And may the Great Architect of the Universe continue to Bless our great Fraternity and our great Country.
