The explanation of this phenomenon is beyond me, what exactly are we looking at? Is this an optical illusion/lens flare or a rogue planetary system as predicted by the Ancient Sumerians??

You will find that this was an alignment of Venus, Mars, Mercury and Jupiter. I got up early to get some picks from Perth, pretty awesome sight. You can download Stellarium for free, with this you can go back ad forwards in time, so you will be able to see exactly how the sky was on that morning, from your position. Cheers
