FORT WORTH — Water gushed down the street at the corner of Miller and Littlejohn avenues in southeast Fort Worth street on Thursday [07/15/10], eroding yards and flooding at least one garage. The torrent was coming from a break in an underground 20-inch water main. The Water Department was not sure what caused the rupture…..

I watched the coverage on four local TV news stations.

There were NINE water main breaks in Fort Worth on 07/15/10 and THREE in or near Dallas.

The 20-inch pipe in Fort Worth split down its entire length (about 10 feet long) and flooded a poor neighborhood. Nearby a road buckled and a car-sized sinkhole opened up, both blamed on the flood caused by the water main break.

Most stations blamed the heat and/or old pipes for the breaks although it did not reach 100 degrees and heat is normal in North Texas this time of year.

A roadway also buckled in Richardson, Texas, on 07/15/10, but this one was blamed on heat because no water was involved. The Dallas water main breaks were barely reported and were blamed on heat.

I have lived in the Metroplex for 25 years and water main breaks used to be rare, generally during extreme cold when smaller pipes froze and burst.

How exactly does normal, but high, surface temperature suddenly cause 12 underground water mains to break in one day? And if the pipes are old, then why haven’t they been breaking before the last few years? A lot of water mains broke in the Metroplex last winter, all blamed on cold although it was not extremely cold and some of the mains were large.

For years the roads here have been dropping, cracking, and heaving with widespread, roller-coaster type effects, plus ridges, large bumps, and the occasional, sudden large hole requiring emergency repairs. The rare times these road problems must be reported in the "news" they are blamed on heat, cold, or rain, depending on the time of year, although in the past only potholes were common.

I just saw a documentary a few weeks ago about the aging infrastructure in the US. While I do not doubt that there is a lot of shifting going on beneath our feet, a lot of it has to do with the fact that things were designed to last 50-80 years, and that lifespan was spent long ago.

I guess we're due for another New Deal?

Let the market crash, kill the dollar, fight a huge war... and then build new bridges.

Now that is progress!

oh btw , call me crazy ( you can ) George Kavassilas said in his last loony vid that scientists found out that elements are beginning to disintegrate but they won't tell ( such a surprise )

he still believes that earth will turn in to a star in 2013 so this can explain that :p
