Only news I could find today about reptilians today!

150-pound tortoise found strolling in LA suburb

ALHAMBRA, Calif. (AP) -- At least officers didn't have to issue a speeding ticket when they spotted a giant tortoise ambling down a street suburban Los Angeles.

The Alhambra Police Department joked on its Facebook page that the 150-pound reptile was captured Saturday afternoon after a brief pursuit.

"The tortoise did try to make a run for it; but, our officers are pretty fast," the post said.

It took two officers to heft the hard-shelled creature into a patrol car. They then took the reptile to the local police station before turning it over to animal control authorities.

Giant tortoises are not indigenous to the Los Angeles area.

Police are asking anyone with a big tortoise that went missing this weekend to contact them. They aren't sure if this one escaped or was abandoned by its owner.

Police say this particular reptile has some distinctive markings. They aren't revealing them for the time being, however, to ensure that whoever claims the tortoise is its rightful owner.

Oh, those things are cool. I can't remember what they're called, but one of my neighbors has some. Kind of a fad pet, I think. Someone will claim it, they aren't cheap either. Really weirdly friendly, in a way you wouldn't think of a turtle being.

I looked up the species last nite but forgot the name. It is from Africa I know that. Im just glad the LAPD did not have to shoot the thing to death!

I think they are called Gallapagos Tortoises. From the island where Darwin did his evolutionary studies.

Though I may be wrong

Those ones are ALOT bigger and almost extinct. They look different too, not as green as this one.

Yay, happy ending! Big turtle is going home! Also, his name is Clark, which is amazing.

Also, Clark (and my neighbors pets) are Sulcata Tortoises.

And that's a great video, Vulcanic. I always stop to get turtles out of the road, you'd be surprised how many assholes here go out of their way to hit them on purpose. I carried one across a 4-lane highway the other night. I always wonder, what do they think when some crazy woman grabs them from behind and races them across the road to where they're going? Do they think "Damn, I TELEPORTED!" or is it like an alien abduction experience, where for the rest of their lives they're going to be telling all the other turtles about it and nobody will believe them.

me too, sounds gross but i also keep gloves in my car to remove roadkill (something about running a living thing over a million times until its dust just really bugs me)

but please people its a wonderful thing to help nature but we must be very careful to not make a bad situation worse, use smarts, look around and be aware of your surroundings before attempting to help animals on the road :flop:

should she go to jail?

I thought about that woman when I was stopping to help the turtle the other night. I don't think she should get life in prison, she didn't mean to hurt anyone. But it was stupid of her to stop her car in the road. The motorcyclist was speeding, too, I'm pretty sure. If there hadn't been a kid on the back, she probably would have got a much lesser charge.

I always make sure I'm pulled safely off the road, with my flashers on, and that it's safe traffic-wise for me to cross the road and do what I have to do. I think this lady just had a gut reaction, the wrong one, and probably living with herself will be worse punishment than any they could think of to give her.
