Another 135 cases of mumps were registered in Macedonia on Thursday, raising the total number of infected to over 2000 across the country, the Health Ministry said. Of the newly-infected patients 10 had to be hospitalized due to the severity of their condition. Around 50 patients, mainly children, have been hospitalized in total. Earlier this week, health authorities kicked off an emergency mass vaccination campaign to deal with the outbreak, aimed at all children aged 15-19 that had not been vaccinated before. Some parents asked schools to shut down provisionally until the outbreak is contained, but authorities have not reached a formal decision yet. TIRANA, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Slovenian President Danilo Turk said on Tuesday that his country supports Macedonia's bid to join NATO and the European Union.
"We are fully supporting Macedonia's accession to the EU and NATO," Turk said in his meeting with his Macedonian counterpart Branko Crvenkovski. Turk, who is on a two-day visit to Macedonia, urged Macedonia to quickly solve a long-running name dispute with Greece to clear the obstacle on its road to NATO.'s NATO bid was thwarted by Greece over the 18-year-long name dispute between the two neighbors at the alliance's summit in Bucharest last April. Athens has contended that the former Yugoslav state's determination to call itself Macedonia has concealed territorial ambitions over its own northern province of the same name. In their meeting, the two presidents vowed to step up economic cooperation between their two countries. "Trade exchange between us was on the rise and Slovenia's investments in Macedonia are booming. However, there is a room for further development," the two presidents said.
