THREE countries at risk of devastating tsunami after massive 8.0 magnitude earthquake

The quake, which struck 50 miles from the coast of Chile, sparked the evacuation of residents on the country’s Pacific coastline

Richter scale: Coastlines near the epicentre are at risk
Three countries were at risk of a devastating tsunami last night after a massive 8.0-magnitude earthquake.

The quake, which struck 50 miles from Iquique on the coast of Chile at a depth of 6 miles, sparked the evacuation of residents on the country’s Pacific coastline.

Peru and Ecuador were on high alert while Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Hawaii and mainland United States were also warned that any tsunami could reach their shores.

A spokesman for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said: “An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicentre within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours.”

An 8.0-magnitude earthquake is capable of causing tremendous damage but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake that triggered a tsunami that left up to 280,000 dead measured between 9.1 and 9.3.

In February 2010, Chile was rocked by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake that triggered tsunami waves. 525 people were killed with another 25 never found, according to official figures.

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake occurred just before 22:00 local time on Wednesday off the northern coast of Chile, 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Iquique, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter of the latest quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km (6 miles). Chile’s emergency ministry has ordered a preventative evacuation along the northern Chilean coastline, Reuters reported.

Another quake, measured at magnitude 6.4, also struck 47 km (29 miles) west of Iquique at around 21:00 local time Wednesday evening.

This comes one day after an 8.2 magnitude quake hit 95 km (59 miles) northwest of the same area, around Iquique.

After Tuesday’s quake, tsunami warnings spurred the evacuation of 900,000 people and 11 hospitals along the coastline, government officials said.

At least six people died following the quake, Chile's Interior Minister Rodrigo Penailillo said. Many of the victims died from heart attacks or falling debris.
