Now, Aeros’ blimp-builders are getting a bit of payback, thanks to a bit of Congressional pork. Rep. Brad Sherman slipped $2 million into the defense budget, to study Aeros’ Buoyancy Assisted Lift Air Vehicle, or BAAV. Darpa is now running that examination. According to the company, the program will test Aeros’ "lightweight rigid aerostructure technology," to see if it "can be both light and strong enough to accommodate air loads without failure." If it works, maybe it will validate the "structural approach" for "a new class of buoyancy assisted vehicles that are more robust and have potentially greater military utility. " This vehicle would provide new capabilities the warfighter and would be capable of deploying composite loads of personnel and equipment “from fort to fight”.

It would be capable of conducting search and rescue missions, emergency relief, hurricane evacuation and airborne hospital and many others. It would also offer significant benefits to the oil and gas exploration industry that is operating in remote and ecologically sensitive areas by allowing a constant access to operating sites with a minimum environmental impact.

The Defense Department has ordered a prototype of a high-tech cargo blimp from a California company. The aircraft is designed to land like a helicopter and carry heavy and oversize cargo to places where nothing else can land.

I hate flying. I think I would feel better floating rather than being hurled through the air.

Yes, I watched the video’s mate....

Looks like a great ship.. I like it and it can be used in many ways thanks to its versatility...

The main points I see..
Cheaper to run/fuel
Greater cargo space / more loads
Little if any ground crew / less people required to use it
No need for a runway / can take off and land almost anywhere
Rigid Aluminium/carbon fibre structure / more solid than its predecessors

And the main one is....

Balloons filled with helium....

So the HUGE difference is what exactly? Yes it is way more advanced than its predecessors, but where’s the HUGE difference? It employs the same basic principles as other blimps.

Anyhow, I think it is great, but I would just be wary,,,, I am likewise wary of planes mind you, I don’t trust them... but I do fly often... and it worries me every time...

This thing will never reach 130 MPH unless it has a 120 MPH tail wind.

Also, did that skin look rigid to you?

And did you notice the cargo capability? 66 tons, does that tell you anything?
