"Essex lad rescues Burkina Faso's Paralympic dream

When Burkina Faso's Lassane Gasbeogo and Kadidia Nikiema lined up in the Paralympic cycling time trials on Wednesday, it was the culimanation of a long-held dream."


But less than a month before, as they landed at Heathrow on August 6, it seemed their dream was to be shattered. A payment from their government to cover their lodging and training facilities had failed to materialise, leaving them sitting on the floor of the airport surrounded by their bags, being questioned by police and with nowhere to go.

That's when a 24-year-old from Essex stepped forward to save the situation. Liam Conlon had gone to volunteer as the official Paralympic meet-and-greet contact for the two cyclists and the three others accompanying them.

This is a cracking story about the Paralympic's, the young lad Liam Conlon deserves a big pat on the back, as do the sisters of the Urslines Convent, for rescueing these peoples little dream from the dirt.

There's an untold part of this story - the Roman Catholic Sisters in Brentwood - the Ursulines - took in the women's team from Burkina Faso, and they were helped by donations of clothes and toiletries from parishioners when their luggage failed to arrive.
