You are right to be frustrated...but...as other posts in this thread have shown...the flares folks have been "worried" about are nothing compared to some of the flares between 2000-2001...

However, we all need to take into consideration that there is a "decompression" period for people who are "new" to this concept... they haven't taken the time to look at the history of the flares, have no idea what the different SOHOS and narrow band spectrum captures are as well probably have no idea how to read a K index...and even if they do...more than likely they don't quite grasp proton density...and even if they understand that...they don't understand geomagnetic fluctuations and how specific electromagnetically charged fields of different frequencies (high speed coronal hole streams are much different than a CME) change the "circumstances"...

So...yeah...lots of chicken littles... I have done this myself in the past...several times...until the day comes and goes...and next day..and next day...and then you sit around thinking about what the data really means...and either you spend the time...or you end up being no better than (excuse the phrase...this is not directed at anyone in particular) a monkey looking at an oscilloscope...or a dog or cat looking at the evening news... you see flashy things...but no clue what it all means.

The solar flare that errupted on the 30th was a B2 class flare... a C class flare will make the skies look "purty" in the northern and southern hemispheres... a M class flare will start to disrupt different forms of communication (M1-M5) and an X class flare is where everyone needs to start "looking at the sun" (regarding flares).... even an X1 or X2 is not "horrid"... under specific circumstances...and then again...a large enough high speed coronal hole stream can cause "issues" that people are just starting to understand...like the "elastic"/"band" effect from the geomagnetic field...

There are all sorts of ways the sun interacts with our planet... however... I think the better way to approach people who obviously are frightened but have no clue about what...(regarding the sun)...is to just let them know a "little bit more" about the sun in order to hopefully get some form of awareness on what to worry about.

Sort of like hurricanes...many people freak out about class 3 and class 4 hurricanes... where it is the class 5 and higher that people need to worry about... heck some people freak out about rain...

But being pissed off that someone is obviously just "awakening" to the issues we could be confronted with, regarding the sun, is no real way to "gracefully" handle people... quite the contrary...it is the responsibility of everyone who does understand these things and/or at least has some concept of how they work to pass that knowledge along... so when the day comes where there could be an issue those people are better equipped to understand to what degree...and hopefully be the "word of reason" for friends and family who might not have even contemplated the whole "Solar Flare" concept...

So...while I am tired of seeing people bash other people for having a lack of knowledge...I understand how others could be tired of seeing people post things about concepts they have really no clue about...but then again...if you look at some of the videos here and some of the topics... this site isn't exactly the "Wikipedia" of all things "unknown"... as there are plenty of other things people post that are close to almost "propaganda" in my personal opinion...

I am not a solar expert,and I am not aware of many of the things you mentioned here,but you do raise a valid point,just because I know something already I cant expect everyone else to know the same,but I mean I wish the threads actually provided explanations rather than posting a couple of pics and saying things such as "ITS GONNA BLOW TOMORROW" you know?
