They want attention. Imagine if Anonymous hit the news. More people would be googling who these guys are which then in turn causes more people to look it up to see what everyone is looking up. Articles would be written, media would jump in (assuming that they are unhindered by the rich & powerful, which is a big assumption I know.)
Anonymous doesn't just comprise themselves of hacktivists but of many normal people like you and I. Its a political movement. People having a peaceful protest outside a park is not wrong or illegal and therefore nothing to be worried about.
They can figure out in five seconds of a background search that none of those people are pry the hackers that they want anyway. They are just a bunch of people who already have knowledge of Bohemian Grove what allegedly goes on there and are answering a call to gather and show them that we are starting to notice.
Like it or not, we will all eventually be apart of them sooner or later. Its inevitable that a few with the most wealth and power in this world will be going to war with the many who don't. The supposed elite are winning a mental war with its people because they are pitting us against each other. I have yet to see this so called Anonymous affect anybody but big business and government. I haven't heard one bit of proof that they have caused harm to any "civilians" throughout their exploits. If anyone knows, I would like to know. The most I have heard is that some of us were inconvenienced by some of what they did.
I agree with most of what you say, and fair points, but they might cause us harm in the long run when the governments decide to combat these people, it's an excuse to police the internet and invade peoples privacy waiting to happen... also if the authorities come down hard on Anonymous, then Anonymous calling people to protest would cause the police to consider it to be a protest by Anonymous, Anonymous could become the new al-Qaeda in the sense that it would be a unorganised, if not unexisting, entity that governments while in pursuit of hurt many innocent people, not Anonymous's fault directly I know, but they'd still be a factor...

If you think about, these guys could possibly represent the best chance we have to changing things with a group like this. They have the ability to not only obtain information, but hurt the pocket books of the powerful. Unfortunately, without a somewhat united front, those who have the power will be able to defeat us bit by bit, group by group. Revolution in any terms can royally suck, but in the end game, our previous generations led us into this situation that we are in now. Some unlucky generation has to be the one to lead us out and set us on the right path. Does anyone really want to leave a mess for their children? I for one would like to see my children have a better life than I did, but the current state of affairs in the world are looking a bit glum.
The governments of the world need to be reminded that the many should rule, not the few. The few placed into those positions are merely instruments of the people which is what democracy was intended to be.
If a group like Anonymous will come in and shake the tree, then let them. You never know what we may learn. I know I for one will support peaceful protesting because it "should" still be one of our rights left and we should continue to exercise it because you never know when we may lose it.
