Study recommends total ban on smoking for soldiers

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- You've seen the iconic picture of a soldier with a cigarette dangling from his mouth, but that could soon be a thing of the past.
The Pentagon is considering a ban on the sale and use of tobacco in the military.

The Pentagon is considering a ban on the sale and use of tobacco in the military.

A new study commissioned by the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs recommends a complete ban on tobacco, which would end tobacco sales on military bases and prohibit smoking by anyone in uniform, not even combat troops in the thick of battle.

According to the study, tobacco use impairs military readiness in the short term. Over the long term, it can cause serious health problems, including lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. The study also says smokeless tobacco use can lead to oral and pancreatic cancer.

The Defense Department's top health officials are studying the report's suggestions and will make recommendations to the Pentagon's policy team and Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

The study recommends phasing out tobacco products such as cigarettes and cigars over a five- to 10-year period.

However, the suggested ban does not sit well with many in uniform, including retired Gen. Russel Honore, best known for coordinating military relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina-affected areas with an ever-present stogie. He said soldiers at war need to puff.

"When you're tired and you've been going days on end with minimum sleep, and you are not getting the proper meals on time, that hit of tobacco can make a difference," said Honore, who was in charge of the Army's training programs before he retired.

Other soldiers questioned whether this was a good time to stamp out smoking, given the Army's concern with a high suicide rate.

"For some, unfortunately, they feel that smoking is their stress relief. Well if you take it away, what is the replacement?" said Sgt. 1st Class Gary Johnson.

The Pentagon supports the goal of a tobacco-free military, said spokeswoman Cynthia Smith.

"However, achieving that goal will depend on coincident reductions of tobacco use in the civilian population," she said.

Dr. Ken Kizer, the author of the study, found that civilians don't smoke as much as soldiers. One in three active duty soldiers smoke, he said, adding that among the general population, that number is less than one in five.

The Pentagon banned smoking in buildings on bases years ago. It has counselors on call to help service members quit. But while local governments have heavily taxed tobacco, the commissaries often sell it at deeply discounted prices.

"The military sends very mixed signals," Kizer said. "This is what's confusing to people."

The study found that profits from those tobacco sales -- $80 million to $90 million -- often pay for recreation and family programs on base.

===============================================================
Just like the Air force not letting pilots fly that have ingested Aspartame products, now the Army sees enough problems with smoking to ban it, this should be a huge warning to all you smokers that it is time to quit that shit. If the Army don't let it's grunts smoke, who they treat like dirt, you can be assured that they cause some major health problems.

If you help the Oppressors, eventually you and your family will be oppressed.

I'm a smoker. Personally, I have no problem with legislature being passed to force me to quit. However I do understand it is freedom of choice.

In the military, at least on base, you had to flick out your cherry and stuff the butt in your pocket until you could properly dispose of it. Of course smoking in the arena is a giveaway.

I think Obama is much like me in that, I can't stop, so lets make it illegal so I'll be forced to quit. But that's not America and freedom. I don't smoke marijuana anymore (did for years) but I don't think there should be a ban on it either. Booze is much worse for a person, so there is a hypocrisy there.

Anyway, it may happen. More liberal politics wanting to legislate morality and be your big brother, getting larger and larger to dictate what is acceptible and politically correct to them.

Fags in the military - hell yea!!!! But don't smoke a cig you redneck bum-fuck.

BIG BIG Government beaurocracy defining what is correct for each of us. Hell we may as well move to North Korea. Sooner or later they'll want to portion our rice too.

I thought this thread would be appropriate to link here, just more info on a possible why to this. I believe that the military is trying to push this agenda for a reason. I am not sure if this other thread is the reason but I thought it would give another side of the story. I am a smoker who understands the effects of smoking and as SPOCK said have tried numerous times to quit. I am sure Spock would tell you, I found it much easier to quit pot then to try to quit cigarettes. Yes I do continue to smoke both, but have quit pot numerous times( for extended periods ) and never had the urges or detrimental effects to my mental status as I have when I try to quit cigarettes. When I have tried to quit cigarettes, the thought of a cigarette, permeates my whole being and " I want a cigarette " runs through my mind constantly. It is defiantly the hardest thing I have ever tried to do. I have quit for months at a time and all it takes is one or two and within a week I am back to a pack a day. Pot on the other hand, never has this effect. I may occasionally say to myself I want a joint but the feeling passes and does not come up til I am really stressed again. Just sharing my experience, and thought, if you haven't seen it yet this thread explains some of it.

They know what a great stress reliever cigarettes are on the front lines. Why would you be so bold to claim you are worried about a soldier's health and life span while tossing him a gun and sending him off to war?

I wrote this for the limerick page afer seeing his.

THERE WAS THE AMERICAN ARMY
WHO WERE TOLD THAT SMOKES GIVE THE SNEEZES
IT WAS THEN LATER FOUND
THAT THE RESEARCH UNSOUND
IT INHIBITS THOSE AIRBORNE DESEASES!

NICOTINE, IF SMOKED, IS UNHEALTHY
YEARS AGO IT MADE GOVERNMENT WEALTHY
POPULATION NEEDS TO BURN
SO THEY'VE DONE A U-TURN
AND THEY REALISE THEY'VE GOT TO BE STEALTHY!

IT'S AGAINST A LOT OF YOUR WISHES
AND TO ME IT'S ALL VERY SUSPICIOUS
NOT A SMOKER MYSELF
I PREFER MY HEALTH
BUT TAKING AWAY FREEDOM IS VISCIOUS!

THERE'S SOMETHING REAL STRANGE BOUT THESE NEW LAWS
THERE MADE AT A TIME OF THEIR CHOOSING
IT JUST DON'T MAKE SENSE WHEN THE DEBT IS SO DENSE
AND THE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS THAT THEY'RE LOSING!

SO WHAT IS THEIR ULTIMATE REASON
FOR DECIDING THAT SMOKINGS NOW BAD
FOR TURNING AROUND THATS SO SUDDEN
AND MAKING EX SMOKERS FEEL GLAD!

WELL THE REASON COULD BE QUITE HORRIFIC
A REDUCTION IN WORLD POPULATION
WHILE CUTTING OUT SMOKES
THE WORLD ORDER JOKES
"THEY'VE SWALLOWED IT IN EVERY NATION"!

SO NOW YOUR BODIES ARE NICE AND CLEAR
AND FREE TO BREATH ALL THOSE DESEASES
YOU'LL GET REALLY SICK , BUT DEATH WILL BE QUICK
AND AT LEAST YOUR LUNGS WONT HAVE THE WEEZES!

The same reason they build tanks and such to protect the crew if it gets blown up, you need soldiers to fight, and it is better to keep your veterans alive. War of attrition the less self losses you have the better.

Isn't that really what war all boils down too though?

WHY DON'T YOU JUST MOVE TO A MUSLIM COUNTRY WHERE BEING GAY IS ILLEGAL AND WOMEN AREN'T ALLOWED TO GO TO SCHOOL AND GET BEATINGS FOR GOING OUT IN PUBLIC UN ESCORTED. BETTER YET- JUST JOIN THE TALIBAN- YOU'D FIT RIGHT IN WITH THAT SORT OF THINKING!!!
