Its more or less exactly how Assad says it is.

Assad is a serial killer of his people including women and babies, with the support of Russia and China. I think what is happening is of biblical proportions in Syria. The prophecy includes Israel, and sounds like Assad is threatening something nuclear for Israel.

Isaiah 17
New Living Translation (NLT)
A Message about Damascus and Israel

17 This message came to me concerning Damascus:

“Look, the city of Damascus will disappear!
It will become a heap of ruins.
2 The towns of Aroer will be deserted.
Flocks will graze in the streets and lie down undisturbed,
with no one to chase them away.
3 The fortified towns of Israel[a] will also be destroyed,
and the royal power of Damascus will end.
All that remains of Syria[b]
will share the fate of Israel’s departed glory,”
declares the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
4 “In that day Israel’s[c] glory will grow dim;
its robust body will waste away.
5 The whole land will look like a grainfield
after the harvesters have gathered the grain.
It will be desolate,
like the fields in the valley of Rephaim after the harvest.
6 Only a few of its people will be left,
like stray olives left on a tree after the harvest.
Only two or three remain in the highest branches,
four or five scattered here and there on the limbs,”
declares the Lord, the God of Israel.
7 Then at last the people will look to their Creator
and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.
8 They will no longer look to their idols for help
or worship what their own hands have made.
They will never again bow down to their Asherah poles
or worship at the pagan shrines they have built.
9 Their largest cities will be like a deserted forest,
like the land the Hivites and Amorites abandoned[d]
when the Israelites came here so long ago.
It will be utterly desolate.
10 Why? Because you have turned from the God who can save you.
You have forgotten the Rock who can hide you.
So you may plant the finest grapevines
and import the most expensive seedlings.
11 They may sprout on the day you set them out;
yes, they may blossom on the very morning you plant them,
but you will never pick any grapes from them.
Your only harvest will be a load of grief and unrelieved pain.
12 Listen! The armies of many nations
roar like the roaring of the sea.
Hear the thunder of the mighty forces
as they rush forward like thundering waves.
13 But though they thunder like breakers on a beach,
God will silence them, and they will run away.
They will flee like chaff scattered by the wind,
like a tumbleweed whirling before a storm.
14 In the evening Israel waits in terror,
but by dawn its enemies are dead.
This is the just reward of those who plunder us,
a fitting end for those who destroy us.

I really, really don't think that there is enough coming out on Bashar and the Baath party. We seem to be unable to get much of any kind of analysis, based on the dearth of information that is actually coming out of Syria that is believable.

At any rate, I would like to throw in a few tid-bits that I have not seen addressed much (if at all). One, is the power of the Baath party in Syria; the Baath party is the only political party in Syria, and its philosophy is very similar to that of its Iraqi sister. For the most part, Hafez Al-Assad ruled and controlled the Baath party, and he groomed his eldest son to take over that leadership. Unfortunately for him (but to the relief of the Syrian people) his son died in a car accident a few years before Hafez died, and his quiet, physician-trained son had to take over.

For the most part, the Baath party controls Bashar, not the other way around. He was able to bring in and institute a few progressive changes into Syria (like, a few more computers in a country where most BANKS didn't even have computers!), but the Baath party has had his hands tied behind his back.

The way you have to look at it is that the Baath party is really the Alawite party, and Syria is their only homeland. I do think that he is correct in identifying that a lot of the fighting that is going on is "from the outside" but we also have to consider that it's not just another CIA conspiracy, but take into consideration that there really is a maroading hoard of "Islamic freedom fighters" who have nothing better to do than to insert themselves into war zones in the Middle East, all with different purposes and agendas. And it isn't so much as nefarious as a planned Muslim Brotherhood army trying to establish the caliphate, but it really is just a bunch of guys who for the most part don't have much of anything else to do. When I was in Syria 13 years ago, I had in-laws and their extended family who talked relatively openly about fighting in Afghanistan in the late 80's. They didn't have great jihadist ideals; one hated college and didn't know what he wanted to do with himself when he dropped out but didn't want to move back in with his parents. Fighting in Afghanistan gave him a few free meals every day and helped kill boredom. Another one was an engineer who wanted to take advantage of the free training the Taliban was offering in order to get enough experience to get a real job. These guys weren't fundamentalist loons, they just saw an opportunity and took it!

So anyways, I do think the reality on the ground in Syria is more a disorganized mish-mash of people and groups than any kind of direct conspiracy. There are a ton of opportunists there, just stealing each others weapons and trying to beat each other to be the first to the neck of the chicken. There are Muslim Brotherhood fighters, there are Salafist fighters, there are bored unemployed fighters, there are civilian Alawites trying not to lose their only land, there are probably Baath party mercenaries fighting in the Syrian army... And I'm not sure, unless it's the case of the Muslim Brotherhood, that there are any kind of political plans for the country once Assad & his party is toppled. Which in case, Syria will turn into another power vacuum and there will be 2-3 decades of never-ending war...

I can't speak about how much of the Constitution is in effect anymore... But thank God we still somewhat resemble a Republic and not a democracy!
