LONDON -- BBC Director General George Entwistle resigned Saturday after saying the broadcaster should not have aired a report that wrongly implicated a politician in a child sex-abuse scandal that has thrown the 90-year-old state-funded broadcaster into turmoil.

Entwistle, just two months into the job, has faced widespread criticism since a rival broadcaster carried charges last month that a former BBC star, the late Jimmy Savile, was one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders.

LONDON — George Entwistle, director general and editor in chief of the British Broadcast Corporation resigned Saturday after a flagship news program aired a mistaken allegation that an ex-politician sexually abused children.

The BBC had already issued a full apology on Friday, but on Saturday its director general had to admit under questioning from his own journalists that he had not known in advance about the Newsnight report, weeks after being accused of being too hands-off over the previous scandal on the same program.

Britain's national broadcaster, the BBC, has admitted making basic journalistic errors, specifically when it wrongly implicated a politician in a child sex abuse scandal.
The scandal has led to the resignation of the Director General on Saturday, and on Monday, two senior journalists were relieved of their duties.
Al Jazeera's Emma Hayward reports from London.
