Behold "The Ningen": A Terrifying Cryptoid

The "Ningen" a large-scale unidentified creature that appears in the Antarctic Ocean. "NINGEN" means literally "Human being" in Japanese, it`s allegedly a very large unknown animal sighted by Japanese fishers, which bares an uncanny resemblance to us Humans

Not only a face, but other reports include even arms and hands.

One could speculate that a sea creature, even a known one, could be mistaken for the “Ningen”.

Image

Skates and rays, for instance, have nostrils and mouths that look like a face.

In fact, they look so “human” that they are often mistaken or sold as devils or extraterrestrials — and Japanese fishers know that for centuries.

The Ningen is allegedly 20 to 30 meters in length and there only vague reports that the creature was seen near the Antarctic Ocean.

What if the poor sailors were not scared and pulled off a by giant squid but by the "Ningen"!? Arthur C. Clarke examines a number of "monster" sea creatures once considered to be part of ancient myth and folklore:

Maybe, the "Ningen" is responsible for the "Bloop" or the "Lowdown"

Scientists have revealed a mysterious recording that they say could be the sound of a giant beast lurking in the depths of the ocean. Researchers have nicknamed the strange unidentified sound picked up by undersea microphones "Bloop." While it bears the varying frequency hallmark of marine animals, it is far more powerful than the calls made by any creature known on Earth, Britain's New Scientist reported on Thursday.

Image

It is too big for a whale and one theory is that it is a deep sea monster, possibly a many-tentacled Giant Squid..Titanosaurus ...Octalus..Cthulhu...or the Ningen?

In 1997, Bloop was detected by U.S. Navy "spy" sensors 3,000 miles apart that had been put there to detect the movement of Soviet submarines. The frequency of the sound meant it had to be much louder than any recognised animal noise, including that produced by the largest whales.

So is it a huge octopus or what? Although dead giant squid have been washed up on beaches, and tell-tale sucker marks have been seen on whales, there has never been a confirmed sighting of one of the elusive cephalopods in the wild.

R'lyeh is a sunken city located deep under the Pacific Ocean and is where the godlike being Cthulhu is buried. When R'lyeh rises in Lovecraft's short story "The Call of Cthulhu" (1928), the only portion of the city that emerges is a single "hideous monolith-crowned citadel" in which Cthulhu is entombed. The human onlookers are awed by the sheer immensity of the city and by the frightening suggestiveness of the gargantuan statues and bas-reliefs.

Image

Image

The city is a panorama of "vast angles and stone surfaces ... too great to belong to anything right and proper for this earth, and impious with horrible images and disturbing hieroglyphs." The geometry of R’lyeh is "abnormal, non-Euclidean, and loathsomely redolent of spheres and dimensions apart from ours." In Lovecraft's stories, R'lyeh is sometimes referred to in the ritualistic phrase "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn", which roughly translates to "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming"

For years sailors have told tales of monsters of the deep including the huge, many-tentacled kraken that could reach as high as a ship's mainmast and sink the biggest ships. However Phil Lobel, a marine biologist at Boston University, Massachusetts, doubts that giant squid are the source of Bloop. "Cephalopods have no gas-filled sac, so they have no way to make that type of noise," he said. "Though you can never rule anything out completely, I doubt it." Nevertheless he agrees that the sound is most likely to be biological in origin. The system picking up Bloop and other strange noises from the deep is a military relic of the Cold War.

In the 1960s the U.S. Navy set up an array of underwater microphones, or hydrophones, around the globe to track Soviet submarines. The network was known as SOSUS, short for Sound Surveillance System. "The sound waves are almost like voice prints. You're able to look at the characteristics of the sound and say: 'There's a blue whale, there's a fin whale, there's a boat, there's a humpback whale and here comes and earchquake," he says.

But some sounds remain a mystery he says. Like mysterious "Bloop"!

Surely, a nice modern sea monster legend and I hoped I sqeezed all Info available out of it

Beware the Bloop

Mysterious giant beasts may lurk in the darkest depths of the ocean, making whale-like noises that are baffling scientists, it was disclosed today. Researchers have nicknamed the strange unidentified sound picked up by undersea microphones ``Bloop''. While it bears the varying frequency hallmark of marine animals, it is far more powerful than the calls made by any creature known on Earth.

In 1997, Bloop was detected by sensors up to 4,800 km apart, New Scientist magazine reported. That meant it had to be much louder than any recognised animal noise, including that produced by the largest whales. One suggestion is that the sound is coming from giant squid, which live at extreme depths of up to four km. Although dead giant squid have been washed up on beaches, and telltale sucker marks have been seen on whales, there has never been a confirmed sighting of one of the elusive cephalopods in the wild. The largest dead squid on record measured about 18 metres including the length of its tentacles, but no one knows how big the creatures might grow. However Phil Lobel, a marine biologist at Boston University in Massachusetts, US, doubts that giant squid are the source of Bloop.

``Cephalopods have no gas-filled sac, so they have no way to make that type of noise,'' he said.

``Though you can never rule anything out completely, I doubt it.''

Nevertheless he agrees that the sound is most likely to be biological in origin. The system picking up Bloop and other strange noises from the deep is a military relic of the Cold War. In the 1960s the US Navy set up an array of underwater microphones, or hydrophones, around the globe to track Soviet submarines. The listening stations lie hundreds of metres below the ocean surface, at a depth where sound waves become trapped in a layer of water known as the ``deep sound channel''.

Image

Here temperature and pressure cause sound waves to keep travelling without being scattered by the ocean surface or bottom. Most of the sounds detected obviously emanate from whales, ships or earthquakes, but some very low frequency noises have proved puzzling. Scientists believe many of these - given names such as Train, Whistle, Slowdown and Upsweep - can be explained by ocean currents, volcanic activity , or the movement of Antarctic ice. Bloop, however, remains a tantalising mystery.

Unidentified Deep Sea Sound: The "Whistle"

Image

Image

This sound was recorded by the autonomous hydrophone deployed at 8oN, 110oW on July 7, 1997 at 0730Z. Origin of the signal is unknown, and it was not detected on any other hydrophone. The band of energy between 1 and 6 Hz represents "strumming" of the mooring in mid-water currents.

Unidentified Deep Sea Sound: "Julia"

Image

This sound was recorded on March 1, 1999 on the Equatorial Pacific Ocean autonomous hydrophone array. The source of the sound is unknown, but is sufficiently loud to be heard over the entire array. The duration is approximately 15 seconds and is severely band limited. The approximate origin is 1999JD60 2218Z near 15S, 98W.

Unidentified Deep Sea Sound: The "Train"

Image

This sound was recorded on March 5, 1997 on the Equatorial Pacific Ocean autonomous hydrophone array. The sound rises to a quasi-steady frequency. The origin of the sound is unknown.
162K wav file:
http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/vents/acoustic ... /train.wav

Unidentified Deep Sea Sound: The "Upsweep"

Image

This sound was present when PMEL began recording SOSUS in August, 1991. It consists of a long train of narrow-band upsweeping sounds of several seconds duration each. The source level is high enough to be recorded throughout the Pacific. It appears to be seasonal, generally reaching peaks in spring and fall, but it is unclear whether this is due to changes in the source or seasonal changes in the propagation environment. The source can be roughly located at 54o S, 140oW, near the location of inferred volcanic seismicity, but the origin of the sound is unresolved. The overall source level has been declining since 1991 but the sounds can still be detected on NOAA's equatorial autonomous hydrophone arrays.
