Smile ... Beluga whale poses for photo

A BEAUTIFUL white Beluga whale glides through freezing waters under a sheet of ice and gives a smile to the camera.

The stunning image, taken in the icy waters of Northern Russia's White Sea, shows the latest in up close animal encounters in the wild.

And the friendly whales were not shy when it came to having their picture taken, revealed photographer Franco Banfi.

The 58-year-old dived into the chilly waters through a hole cut into the ice.

He said: "Obviously we don't know what they think, but they are very curious creatures.

"Sometimes, I'm sure they're trying to figure out what we are and where we came from."

The Beluga whales are thriving at a special whale sanctuary in the White Sea built by Marine Biologists from St Petersburg University in 2006.
