TEDxTalks

Published on Dec 30, 2013

Benjamin Bratton, Associate Professor of Visual Arts at UCSD and Director of The Center for Design and Geopoltics at CALIT2, asks: Why don't the bright futures promised in TED talks come true? Professor Bratton attacks the intellectual viability of TED, calling it placebo politics, middlebrow megachurch infotainment, and the equivalent of right-wing media channels. Does TED falsely present problems as simply puzzles to be solved by rearranging the pieces?

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

He raised some interesting points. His Kony observations cracked me up a little bit. The most disturbing thing about the Kony phenomenon, though, was that the majority of the money that facebook addled guilty hipsters donated to like totally save child soldiers in Africa and stuff was actually used by a radical Christian organization to lobby (successfully) for the death penalty for homosexuality in parts of Africa. In that case, the catchy emotionally manipulative 15 minute video, optimized for social media sharing and the diminished attention span of the average millennial, was used to completely deceive and manipulate the audience. In the case of Kony, it was a fundraising drive, with most of the funds given by people who would have been horrified to know where it was really going.

I'm not saying I don't enjoy TED, or that I think that it should go away. I think it's a neat platform to spread information, provided that you're smart enough to take the information with a grain of salt. The problem is, those little quickie videos of simplified science and technology are designed so that an average person can watch them, understand them, and feel smarter. This is not necessarily a good thing….just like it wasn't a good thing with Kony. Such a thing can be so easily used to manipulate the minds of people who don't even realize they're being fucked with because they feel so darn good about themselves when they watch.
Remember, in a real conspiracy, all players are pawns regardless of their rank.

TED has a funtion above the retoric, and that is vision, if you cant see you cannot steer
or drive this worlks for agenda's and cars
Although im a christian I busted up at his megachurch Quip, what he is talking about
in science and tech has been fomating just like the beast of megomaniacal churches,
so to the feel good science is entrenched into tenured religosity any progress is thwarted
by minor intellects of high standing in the comunity, and in some minor sense benjamin
bratton is funtioning as a supressor.

As a mear mechanic/welder/gas turbine tech myself I have seen the microcosm of
defeatism every time a project is considered or a critical failure is occured or occuring.

For example i was wworking a power plant when a tan wall of a boiler section was kinda pink,
turns out the insulation refractory had failed and the steel holding back the firestorm
was about to yeild to destruction, my omnipotent thought was to shut down immedatly
first i had to find some one to believe me , three levels of Bureaucracy and scorn
someone took the time to look

my point is my idea of action was ok but wrong, the engineer placed 3 waterhoses upon the steel
for three days, the plant remained running untill a sceduled shut down , avoiding a huge fine
for shutting down early and quitting

benjamin bratton here is like me , a little premature on the death sentance and a little early
there are other options that may not present themselves to benjamins keen intelectual prowness
but others are here looking to make electricity fromthorium reactors , and propel space ships
with clever gravitational reduction meta materials.

what ever can go good, has a good chance. if you perservere (you can quote me, bilzer)
it really does fall on wether the glass is half empty, or the insumountable is within reach

benjamin "feels" like a man who is beaten down by alot of stupid around him
and its prolly true, others like tesla and farnsworth have accomplished what
was forcefully resisted , no good deed go's unpunished ben

Very insightful and thorough post OtheklzeR - and welcome btw :hiho:

I especially liked this one:

no good deed go's unpunished

I use this all the time - and its true in an arcane way......lol

Cheers.

EDIT:

I find it interesting he refers to TED as "middlebrow megachurch infotainment".

Though I do see that correlation - there is a decent level of bitterness by him for using that.

But in some ways I lean in that direction - the infotainment paradigm here on dusty earth seems to be unrelenting and TED is not impervious.

i liked his thought about how we allow a broken system(financial) to dictate the rules of the land at that solutions can only be had with the big problems fixed first...otherwise we are continually putting band-aids on or obscure rules to protect the broken system instead of the system working to protect us...

evildweeb I was just at a mega church in Los angles this past sat by invite

It reminded me of disneyland, walts masonic dream of a snappy mega city
with mega churches and all the polished actors .
its music was multicultural and repetitive , content less and unmotivating
the black singer lacked the punch im used to when i attended black pentacostal churches
non of these people are prepared for the devistation of the change from the kingdom
of men to the kingdom of god. they lacked the heart, im shure they are all nice
which makes benjamin bratton's point.

A working of hidden knowledge is not fast or slow, it of its self is not good or evil
it is to the articifer and his authority do do the working, and his desire in doing the working
so it is with christanity , who is doing what and why are they doing it

I tell you this because i found a working in the bible that a high priest should do
if a man thinks his wife is cheating, the priest is to sweep the floor of the temple
and put it in the wine and give it to the woman to drink, if she is a adulterer
then her guts will become eaten out, and if not nothing will happen.

what happens to the high priests who comit adultery and do not teach the kingdom
of god and persue a gospel of prosperity, what elegant art has god instore that lead
the sheep to slaughter
